For as long as mankind exists, has it raised questions about its own existence. “Where do we come from? What does it mean to be alive? What is our purpose on earth?” However, not only were questions raised on the how and why of being alive, but also on mankind’s future. After all, being alive necessarily means that in the end, life must end as well. “Where do we go to? What is death? What is the purpose of living, when in the end, death is inevitable?”
How to answer such questions? With religion? With philosophy? Do these theories prove what it is that we will find beyond the gates of death, and remove our fears?
It is not strange that many religions and philosophies hope for an afterlife, but what ensures this?
The answer is not a belief, but pure, cold, hard facts. Out of the mix of beliefs and constant observation, continuous tests and countless errors, the art of interacting with the deceased emerged: necromancy. It is this art, which is almost a science in its traits and a religion in its beauty, that gave people hope and trust. Yes, there is an afterlife, and yes, there is a meaning to being alive. It is very likely, with the interests being so high, that necromancy serves as the oldest, and most ancient, form of magic. Based on its wealth of knowledge and its ideas that the human body and the incorporeal can interact, did the other types of magic emerge. But as always, must the old make room for the new, and necromancy slowly disappeared from common sight. Eventually, it was believed to have died with the last covens centuries ago.
Yet when Malas was discovered, travellers were astound to find necromancy was alive and well, being practiced in one of Malas' major cities: Umbra. The Umbra Elders are wise, and training under their service can reap major rewards. Imagine traditions as old as the realm itself in whose honour they move across the lands to care for the bodies and spirits of the dead. Imagine an indifference towards race, gender and belief as unshakeable as the methods with which death chooses those he comes to. Imagine the knowledge of uncountable spirits of the dead ready at hand for an eternity of learning and study. Try to grasp the concept of a life in the name of the duty for the dead, a life of learning, a life of powers and politics in the pursuit of duty and tradition. The road may be bumpy, and some may claim that the road is dark as well, but then again, where else has knowledge ever been found, then in the darkest of areas?
So, will you walk with us?
