The most sacred tome of literature in the Avatari world, the Book of Light is both ancient and mystical. Within its pages can be found a myriad of stories concerning the holy men and women of yore; each tale exemplary of Avatarian morality, concepts, ideals, or laws. The Trials of Joshua, for example, underpins the issue of Elves and the False Virtue, Compassion. Whilst the Book of David focuses on man's natural cynicism and the vice of godlessness. They were each written by unknown and nameless apostles or prophets of the faith's earliest days, their mouths and quills supposedly guided by the Higher Being himself. Below are a selection of those stories:

Trials of Joshua

And so it came that the land did know the footfall of an elf. And this elf was called Ley'yan. Elves being of the dark, the elf Ley'yan did seek the innocent. And the elf Ley'yan did come to the home of Joshua whose woman was Vanessa and whose children numbered two sons and one daughter. Joshua was of those who plow the dirt and the time was of harvest. And Joshua's woman Vanessa did take into her male's home the elf Ley'yan. And in Joshua's home she did know the elf. Joshua's children did learn of this yet told not their father. And when Joshua did see the offspring of the elf he did learn of his woman Vanessa's sin. And the Lord did command Joshua to strike down those who would cast aside His Virtues of Honor and Honesty. Joshua fell upon Vanessa with great fury. And Vanessa was no more. And her years were thirty and two. And Joshua sought out those who carried his blood and he fell upon them with great fury. And his children who were two sons and one daughter were no more. And Joshua did gaze upon the spawn of the elf and his woman and he did strike out at it. And the demon child was no more. And the Lord did command Joshua to seek out that which stole what he had lost. Joshua did go forth and he did seek out the elves of Ley'yan. And Joshua fell upon Ley'yan's woman. And she was no more. And Joshua fell upon Ley'yans spawn. And they too were no more. Ley'yan did hear of Joshua and his wrath and the elf did flee. The Lord did see fit to give Joshua great speed so that in two years time Joshua did overtake Ley' yan. And Joshua did spread the blood of the elf upon the ground in great quantities. And the Lord was pleased, and said unto Joshua "You have served your Lord Higher Being and you shall find your reward in my home." And the Lord called Joshua home.

Trials of Shemp

There existed a cave in the earth. And in this cave dwelt beasts of forked tongue. And 'twas within this cave in the earth that the Lord bade Shemp to lay down. And on the first night many beasts of forked tongue did pass over Shemp. Yet they struck not. And on the morning following the first night, the Lord did command Shemp to remain. And on the second night many of the beasts did threaten Shemp. Yet they struck not nor did they approach. And on the morning following the Second night, the Lord Higher Being once more commanded Shemp to remain. And on the third night all beasts of forked tongue, and all those beasts that seek darkness did flee the cave in the earth. Frightened as they were of the might of the Higher Being. And on the morning following the third night, Higher Being did appear to Shemp. The Lord spoke "Darkness moved against you on the first night within this cave, yet you remained." And Shemp did reply, "You bade me lay down with forked tongue beasts, you are the One God. And I am your servant." And the Lord was pleased with Shemp. And of the second night the Lord did say "Wickedness did threaten you with harm on the second night. Yet you remained." And Shemp did reply "You bade me remain in the cave in the earth. You are the Father and I am your Child." And the Lord was pleased with Shemp. And the Lord did speak of the Shemp's final night within the Cave in the earth. "On the third night the creatures of darkness and beasts of forked tongue did flee this place. Yet you remained." And Shemp did reply "My life is yours to mold or shatter as is fit. Death shall I welcome when in service to thee." And the Higher Being was pleased with Shemp, for he had shown great depth of understanding of each of the Lords Virtues. And on the fourth night Shemp was commanded to leave the cave in the earth.

Book of David

And David was of those who keep herds. And David's woman was of the name Edeth. And David and his woman did not follow the Virtues of the Lord. And in the twenty seventh year of David's life the Lord did speak unto him. The Lord did ask why David and his woman did not worship the Virtues of the Lord. And David did say "Bring forth proof of thine existence, for then I shall worship thee." And the Lord was angry. And the Lord did speak in a great thunder, and the whole of the earth shook. And David did not belive. And the Lord was angry. And the Lord did bring shadow across all of the lands. And David did not belive. And the Lord was angry. And the Lord did consume Edeth with a great fire, and this he did before David's own eyes. And David belived, and David felt the power of the Lord within him. And the Lord did command David to worship His Virtues. And David obeyed. And in the fortyninth year of David's life the Lord did again speak unto him. "Twenty and two years you have served me, and you shall be brought into my garden." And the Lord did call David home.
