Smaed Fretting was born in Leafsta in 328 SR, two years younger than his cousin Jern, but of a more firey temperament. After Jern returned to Trinsic with the dire news of the fate of Leafsta he left Trinsic as a 15 year old and enrolled in the Guardsmen Militia, determined to protect Yew villages from the fate his home had suffered. He was mentored by the Yreap siblings, Hans and Elisabeth, and planned to become a Waywatcher. He embraced the religion of the Guardsmen Militia and regularly attended Stonekeep Church. To this day he wears round his neck the wooden ankh that he was given by the Empath Abbey monk who befriended him.
With the rank of Footman and while on furlough in Trinsic he stumbled upon documents - Agnes' Last Will and Testament and her personal diaries - revealing the truth of his birth. As a result of a switch of babies (the other was stillborn) his natural mother was his aunt Agnes Fretting and his father an elf, the elf known only to him as Talis (a nickname), who had escorted Agnes and her wards to Trinsic, as described in The Book of Leafsta.
Elves were not tolerated in the Guardsmen Militia, so he copied the relevant diary extract, which he keeps to this day, left Trinsic and returned to Yew. After visiting Stonekeep to resign, he began the search for his natural father. After much travail he found what he sought in the ancient and magic-veiled Village of Silverleaf on the north east coast of Yew.
His father turned out to be an elven ranger in the Yew Village of Silverleaf, known to some humans as Talis, whose full name is Thalander. Smaed made the village his home, embraced his elven heritage and became a scout and stealth-archer. He built a cottage with the villagers' help, on a headland in Silverleaf overlooking the sea, which is the base for his scouting missions. He has written down his story, a 10 volume book called Smaed's Story that can be found in the Library of the Borough of Yew and in the library of the Village of Silverleaf, located in the Virtues Shrine next door to his cottage.
