Origins

The name shard is specific to Ultima Online and comes as a result of the Shattering of the Gem of Immortality by wizard Mondain. Today we have 29 different evolving worlds (including the Test Shard), or shards. Each shard is unique from one another and lives its own life independantly from the others.

One shard, many servers

Even though we refer to the Ultima Online shards as one server, one shard is often composed of several servers working together in a form of cluster. You typically notice this when you pass the infamous server lines that are many and somewhat annoying in the current version of Ultima Online. EA/OSI has released no information on how many servers that runs the game.

The login server

The login server of Ultima Online is seperate from the shards.
