Nystul

Nystul is Lord British's royal magician, and one of his closest advisors. He is quite a powerful mage and has a sharp mind. He lives in Castle Britannia.

Nystul first appeared in Ultima VI, where his vision saved the Avatar from being sacrificed. He helped the Avatar with the Book of Prophecies, directing him to Mariah, and the Orb of the Moons, directing him/her to Lord British. Nystul was also present when Lord British and Lord Draxinosum met for the first time at the Shrine of the Codex.

200 years later, at the time of Ultima VII, Nystul was also a victim of the disturbed Ether, having become clumsy and quite senile. Thankfully, with the destruction of the Guardian's generator, his sanity was restored, and he helped the Avatar by selling him spells and reagents.

Nystul was essential for the plot of Ultima Underworld II. He reseached methods of breaking the Blackrock Dome, and gave the Avatar much good advice. Also, he treated the small Blackrock Gems for the Avatar, and later decyphered the Spellbook of Mors Gotha. Together with the Avatar, he managed to free the castle from the Guardian's grip. He cast the necessary spells while the Avatar used the Horn of Praecor Loth. After this, he was not heard of again.

Nystul in Ultima Online

In the lore of Ultima Online Nystul played a major role both in defending the Kingdom from external threats and managing civil affairs in the Great Council, particularly in the months following the King's dissappearance. During the early events related to the Zog Cabal – the "Crisis" – Nystul created a special gate allowing the citizens of Trinsic to leave the besieged city, while simultaneously preventing Juo'nar and his minions from entering. He also warned Lord British of the dangers of using the then volatile but pioneering Gate Travel spell to go to Yew, convincing him to take a more traditional route, thus walking into an ambush masterminded by Keeonean. Nystul also managed to open a gate to the Ethereal Void, where five brave adventurers could retrieve the ghost of Joye, and lead her to Sir Dupre. He later played a major role in the Gargoyle's Redemption scenario, building a towering device to bring down the shields of Exodus' dungeon in central Ilshenar. This strange war machine still stands behind the walls of Castle Britannia in the Trammel facet. Following this event Nystul dissappeared, with his role as Court Mage taken up by his apprentice Calinin, until the latter's unfortunate death.

His current location is unknown.
