Ranks of Nobility |
The Nobility are the privelaged few who form the elite strata of Britannian society. The system traces it's origins to the feudal period that predated Mondain's rule and the extensive and bloody Age of Darkness to the beginnings of the modern age, and in may respects still lingers. It is by no means a set in stone term, however. At the very top of the pyrmaid sits the King in majesty, long considered the only immovable and constant figure in the realm. Since the second century AD this position has been held exclusively by Lord British, though in distant Gorimdor the regal heirs of Akalabeth also name themselves King. In the absence of Lord British a series of Regents have ruled beside the mostly aristocratic Great Council. Beneath the royal head forms of nobility vary greatly; from the mightiest Dukes to the untitled Gentry and landless Knights - from the influential Counts and Earls to the many local Barons and Landlords. In some cases one might be a titled noble without land, and in others the owner of land without a title. It is in this respect a flexible class. Though for the most part one cannot join the aristocratic fold unless born to such a position, there are those who have made their own way through merit, rebellion, self-appointment, or indeed conquest. The Magincian title of Imperator – held only once since that island-state's initial fall from greatness – and the relatively young Yewish title of Lord Protector could both be considered positions of nobility, though they are first and foremost the highest martial ranks of their respective realms.
