Mondain, as seen in Ultima VI

Mondain was the second son of the wizard Wolfgang, who he murdered to steal a gem of power, which he would later warp through dark magics to form the Gem of Immortality. Through his rage and ambition, Mondain delivered horrible suffering and sorrow upon the people of the land. He first tried to conquer the kingdom of Akalabeth with an army of monsters and corrupt underlings, though he lost the war through the efforts of a young rival, Cantabrigian British. Angered by this, he withdrew to the Time of Legends via White Gate, and there prepared to once more sweep across the four continents of ancient Sosaria. It was during that period of exile that he found the witch Minax, who he would take on as apprentice and eventual lover. Together, they created the mechanical Daemon, Exodus.

His second assault was brutal. Opperating from his hidden and inaccessable fortress in the Time of Legends, Mondain was all but invincible as his foul magic poisoned the land and his hordes roamed the countryside. Mondain's end came when the Stranger travelled through time to penetrate his fortress and smash the Gem of Immortality. With the Gem destroyed, Mondain's mortality was restored, and the tyrannt finally died. Upon his death the four continents of Sosaria were torn apart, with the north-western landmass eventually becoming Britannia.

Death itself would not end him, however. His Skull would later be reclaimed by Minax from a coven of dark mages and enshrined, becoming a artefact of dark and destructive power. Both his skull and many other bones and possessions would later be recovered and kept under lock-and-key in the court of his oldest foe, Lord British, until their eventual theft by the Zog Cabal.

Mondain in Europa

The character of Mondain played a major role in the lore of the Army of Kaldor, in which it was asserted that Wolfgang had been the King of Akalabeth and Mondain his second son, or even a bastard. Kaldor Heartsease – founder of his namesake nation – was supposedly Wolfgang's eldest son and heir, whose birthright was usurped by Mondain upon their father's murder. Kaldor and his men were sent into exile to the distant and barren land of Gorimdor while Mondain remained behind, only to launch his famed reign of terror.
