Jern Fretting was born in 326 SR. He was 10 when he was taken to safety by his Aunt, Agnes Fretting. After the death of Digs Delver, the burden of providing for his aunt and younger cousin Smaed fell on his teenage shoulders he swore servile allegiance to the Duchy of Trinsic therby becoming a serf.
He became a blacksmith and was befriended by VanQa, the leader of the Trinsic Elves, who gifted him the historic building that used to be the Post Office, a short distance from Trinsic's Westgate. He has been and remains a regular customer at VanQa's tavern, The Trinsic Rose.
By about the age of 30 he had made his way well enough to request and be granted his freedom by the Duke of Trinsic and swore a new oath to the Duke as a freeman. He keeps an occasional diary called Extracts from Jern's Journal. His common-law wife is Moll Sinders with whom he fathered two children - Jern jr (born in 353 SR) and Sharon.
In the late 350s VanQa was stalked by Iglata Slyannen, her drow step-brother, leading to a crisis during which Jern fell in love with her. In the early 360s Jern left Ye Olde Poste Office and moved into Fretting Cottage in the Village of Silverleaf, where in 365 VanQa joined him. The on-going story of their relatonship is recounted in The Smith and the Queen of the Elves.
