Freeshard
From MoongatesWiki
A freeshard is a reverse-engineered UO shard or server. A server emulator allows you to set up your own server, however, at your own risk.
It is important to note that the MoongatesWiki does not, under any circumstances, endorse the use of freeshards. Nor do we support the use of the EA/OSI shards, such as Europa. This wiki is committed to providing information on all topics regarding Ultima Online.
Legal matters
The license agreement for Ultima Online reads:
Ultima Online has been designed by Origin Systems for play only on the Service. The Software is licensed to you for play on the Service only. Origin does not grant you a license to use the Software for any other purpose. You agree to play Ultima Online only on the Service and not through any other means. You further agree not to create or provide any other means through which others may play Ultima Online, for example, through server emulators.
This basically says that you cannot play on someone elses server and that you cannot run a public UO server for others to play on. However, if you play on a private server by yourself, in a single-user environment, you aren't breaking any agreements.
Popular server emulators
- SunUO — Mono-compatible fork of RunUO, runable on the GNU/Linux and various other UNIX-like operating systems, such as Mac OS X.
- RunUO — GPLed server emulator for the .NET Windows-platform.
- Wolfpack — GPLed mature extended emulator for various *NIX-flavours and the Windows-platform.
