Dukes traditionally formed the upper nobility within the Kingdom of Britannia, ranking below the King and Great Council, but above their fellow Lords and Ladies. They possess the largest estates, known as Duchies, and are often styled as regional protectors. However, the decentralisation of power in the Kingdom has since lead the canon of titular meaning to decline somewhat. As such, Barons and Counts might now hold greater authority and martial clout than a Duke. The title and it's trappings are traditionally dynastic, inherrited by the next of kin, such as is the case in Trinsic, where the famed Middlethorn family reign. In Yew, meanwhile the Ducal title maintains its ancient military bearing, with Dukes propped up by either the King's Northern Garrison or following their decline, the Guardsmen Militia.
