Drow

From MoongatesWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The Drow are a race of Elves found in the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D, or DnD) setting. They usually feature ebon dark skin, red eyes, and whiteish hair. In D&D they are typically chaotic evil, with very few exceptions.

Drow are not a race featured in Ultima and Ultima Online, though players took it upon themselves to import drow fiction as best they could to Ultima Online. A typical drow character used to be created as little more than a dark skinned human with white hair, though with the release of the Mondain's Legacy (ML) expansion more and more players have turned their once human characters into dark skinned UO:ML elves. Drow can be found in other fictional sources as well. However those of Ultima Online almost exclusively draw from the lore and character of D&D.

Drow Language

The Drowish tongue is spoken by many dedicated players of drow in UO, and – unsurprisingly – is based on the Ilythiiri language of D&D, as well as some new terms which have been coined by players themself. The most common form of communication is a simple bastardisation of English simple to learn and easy to use, that has often been practiced by players representing foreign tongues. This entails learning a number of simple but core words, and using them in place of their English counterparts.

Drow on Europa

Drow have held a noteworthy presence in Europa for some time now, most notably in the forms of the Von'Sah household and the player-run city-state of Naeloth. From an in-character perspective, the drow are a widely despised race, shunned by most human guilds, and locked in constant hostility with their elven kin. One of the few places in mainland Sosaria that this naturally evil race have found shelter is Trinsic, the city of Honour. Acceptance of these dark-skinned Elves has brought Trinsic much scorn from abroad, though the drowish community remain active, and are found more often in the eastern side of the city than anywhere else.
