About

For centuries one considered immortal and divine son of heaven, Sun Tzu, ruled the vast Nihon Empire with a grip of iron under bushido (the way of the warrior), a rigid system of codes and traditions followed by the warrior class of Nihon which placed particular emphasis on justice, courage, benevolence, politeness, truthfulness, honour, loyalty, and self-control, and also the duty of everyone to respect and honour those above them on the social structure.

Mountainous and barren, with only a few small areas of farming land, Nihon was once a poor country, and it's people struggled to survive the frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. They worshipped the Gods of Nature and called their religion Shinto (the way of the gods), and it was from one of these gods that the Emperor is said to have descended, and so it was that under Sun Tzu's strict but benign rule the land prospered greatly and the people thrived.

In time however, a second religion began to emerge as many of Sun Tzu's priests and monks began to study the ancient secrets of Kotodama (the power of spoken words). As the new cult grew, it established it's own schools and temples and eventually the two religions became direct rivals for supremacy in Nihon, forming bands of "Warrior Monks" to wage war on each other and thus the entire empire began to sink into general discord and chaos.

The situation deteriorated further when the samurai warlords (Daimyo), led by the Shogun, began to take action to counter the incessant warfare as their intervention served only to escalate the conflict into all out civil war. During the long years of warfare that followed the once prosperous land was ripped apart and blasted black as the warrior monks and priests unleashed ever more powerful forces of sorcery against each other, and against the overwhelming military power of the Shogun's samurai warriors.

During the final apocalyptic battle, the High Priest of Kotodama foolisly uttered the forbidden Word of Power. The word reputed to have been uttered by the first god when the universe was created, and the events that followed were the doom of Nihon. The titanic natural and supernatural forces unleashed by the man who sought to use the power of the gods obliterated the very sun from the sky, as fire rained from the heavens, the earth itself buckled and twisted, and the land of Nihon was utterly and forever destroyed.

The Emperor himself tried to avert the catastrophe, calling on every last drop of his divine powers to hold back the heavenly fires and to stabilise the screaming rocks of the Land. For a while it seemed he would succeed as for thirteen days and nights he held the land with the pure force of his divine will, but as the Shogun and his surviving samurai rallied to the Emperor's side, Sun Tzu's power was spent and the primal forces he had held in check for so long broke free and engulfed him.

As the fire once again began to rain down from the sky, Bujin Sho, the Shogun dragged Sun Tzu's lifeless body from the vortex that was consuming him and used his own considerable powers of sorcery and an ancient rune to open a gate to the mythical western lands. Thus did Bujin Sho and his remaining warriors escape the final destruction of Nihon, carrying with them the Emperors dead body.
