Ranks of Nobility

Barons once formed the lower and more numerable ranks of Britannia's landed aristocracy, above Knights and Yeomen, but below the great Counts and Dukes of the realm. They typically ruled over smaller estates, most often tracts of rural land centred around dynastic holdings, though occasionally bore authority in population centres and, rarely, cities. There in lay the nature of the Baronial title's advancement in the Kingdom. With the devolution of governance to the cities and provinces of Britannia, Barons and Counts found themselves often on par with their Ducal counterparts, with newly opened power vacuum's filled by whichever lord or lady held the greatest wealth and power – irrespective of their rank and title. Through this transformation in peerage, the Barons of Minoc, Cove and even the Baron-Elect of Vesper found themselves the equal of their supposed betters. Baronial titles and estates are of a dynastic nature; though exceptions are to be found in the Republic of Vesper and its protectorates, where the chosen heads-of-state bear the title of Baron, and in Trinsic, where the rank is directly appointed as a purely bureaucratic office.

Baronies, depicting the land owned by a Baron or a Baroness, are administrative divisions of a country, usually of lower rank and importance than a county. Baronies are commonly small portions of land directly under the King, though in some cases baronies exists as vassals of the higher ranking areas, such as a duchy.
